MAJOR SERVICE REDUCTIONposted on Friday, March 15, 2013 PDRTA DRAMATICALLY REDUCING SERVICES March 2013
After decades of providing Medicaid transportation under contract, the PDRTA will end this service on April 12, 2013. Other transportation providers in the Pee Dee Region will be used by the broker under contract with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to continue providing Medicaid transportation to those who are eligible.
This service became too costly for PDRTA to continue. As this work was the largest part of PDRTA's network of transportation services in many rural communities, PDRTA expects to end its presence in Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Dillon Counties by May of this year. PDRTA further expects to end ALL demand response services except those in proximity to existing fixed route (scheduled) bus service.
In addition, PDRTA is working hard to seek new local revenue, previously earned through our Medicaid work, necessary to access state and federal funds in support of public transportation. Without any new revenue from a local source, PDRTA will further reduce services to the point that can be sustained through existing and future local revenue. Funding requests have been submitted to many area governmental entities where fixed route service exists. Presentations have also been made in several areas to provide additional information as to service costs and the economic benefits of public transportation in the communities.
The public is welcome to submit comments regarding this situation. In addition to various public meetings ongoing around the Pee Dee to obtain public input, comments may also be submitted to PDRTA by mail (313 S. Stadium Rd., Florence, SC 29506), by telephone to Don Strickland, PDRTA Transportation Manager (843-665-2227, ext 135), or by e-mail through this website (click on the link to "Inquiries"). All public comments will be presented to the PDRTA Board of Directors at their March 28, 2013 meeting. Comments must be received in advance of the meeting date.
